Eden Travertine Disc and Globe Ceiling Light

A flat plate of travertine against the ceiling and an opal glass globe hanging just below it. There is no collar, no visible screw and no metal on show, which is what makes this the quietest fitting in the range despite the globe being fully exposed.

The disc does two jobs. It covers the ceiling rose completely, and it bounces light back up so the ceiling lifts rather than darkening above the globe. Below, the opal glass keeps the source soft enough to look at directly.

Where it earns its place

• Bedrooms. Opal glass means no visible filament and no glare from the bed.
• Hallways. Reads well from the side as well as from underneath, which matters in a corridor where you rarely stand beneath the fitting.
• Three diameters. The plate is made at 20, 25 and 30 cm, so you can match it to the ceiling rather than the other way round.
• Black or beige. Beige disappears politely into pale plaster. Black draws a deliberate dark circle on the ceiling and turns the globe into the focus.

Real stone, so no two are the same

A flat disc shows the full run of the block, so the banding across the face is the most visible of any shape we cut. Beige comes through warm and even. Black is the more variable of the two, often carrying rust and grey through the pitting. Yours will not be an exact match for the photographs. The macro shows the face at full size in both stones.

Fitting it

Diameter is the decision to get right. Twenty centimetres suits a small landing, thirty holds the middle of a living room, and twenty-five is the safe answer if you are torn. All three stand 14 cm off the plaster with the globe fully exposed below the plate, so keep it clear of a door swing and out of reach of a cupboard opening underneath. Straight onto the ceiling point, warm white LED bulb supplied, no dimmer.
